In 1848, in Montenegro, the young idealistic doctor Vanko Winczlav sided with the peasant uprising against the tyranny of the prince-bishop. Betrayed by a peasant, he had no choice but to leave. During his flight, he encountered Veska, a young Bulgarian woman enslaved in an inn. Together, they embarked for the New World. On the crossing, Vanko married Veska, who had no identity papers. Upon arrival on the continent, he found work as a nurse, unable to have his medical degree recognized.

Some time later, Veska gave birth to a son, Sandor, whom she refused to raise, and the couple separated. Respected in the private hospital where he worked, Vanko was seduced by a nurse, Jenny. Later, the death in childbirth of a patient led to Vanko being put on trial for murder and illegal medical practice. Vanko was then imprisoned, and his two young sons were left to fend for themselves following their mother's death.
